This policy explains how NewsScope (operated by InfoTimes Canada) collects, uses, and protects the personal information of users located in Canada and worldwide. By using the service, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Who We Are

NewsScope is a news coverage analysis service operated by InfoTimes Canada. You can reach us at newsscope@infotimes.ca.

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal information:

  • Account data — your name, email address, and hashed password when you register.
  • Subscription & billing data — your chosen plan (Free / Pro), payment method details processed securely through Stripe. We never store raw card numbers.
  • Usage data — search queries, keywords, date ranges, and pages visited within the platform, stored to enforce plan limits and improve the service.
  • Content you create — Knowledge Base entries, saved articles, and feedback submitted through the platform.
  • Technical data — IP address, browser type, session tokens, and approximate location derived from IP for security and fraud prevention.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide, maintain, and improve the NewsScope platform.
  • To process payments and manage your subscription plan.
  • To enforce usage limits and plan entitlements.
  • To send transactional emails (account confirmation, password reset).
  • To generate AI-powered summaries using OpenAI; your queries are sent to OpenAI's API under their data processing terms.
  • To detect and prevent fraudulent activity and abuse.
  • To comply with applicable laws in Canada.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party for marketing purposes.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

We process your personal information under the following legal bases consistent with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial laws:

  • Consent — you provide consent when you create an account and accept this policy.
  • Contractual necessity — processing required to deliver the subscription service you have purchased.
  • Legitimate interests — security monitoring, fraud prevention, and service analytics.
  • Legal obligation — where required by Canadian law.

5. Cookies & Local Storage

NewsScope uses localStorage (not third-party cookies) to store your authentication token and session preferences. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies. Our platform does not embed third-party ad networks.

6. Third-Party Services

We share data with the following sub-processors solely to operate the platform:

  • Stripe Inc. — payment processing. Stripe's privacy policy applies to payment data.
  • OpenAI LLC — AI summarisation of news content. Queries may be sent to OpenAI's servers.
  • Replit Inc. — cloud hosting infrastructure. Our data is hosted on servers in North America.

7. Data Retention

We retain your account and usage data for as long as your account is active, plus a maximum of 24 months after closure, unless a longer period is required by law. You may request deletion at any time (see section 9).

8. Security

We implement industry-standard safeguards including bcrypt password hashing, JWT-based session management, HTTPS-only transport, and access-controlled databases. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights

Under PIPEDA and applicable law you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Withdraw consent and request deletion of your account and data.
  • File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC).

To exercise any of these rights, email us at newsscope@infotimes.ca with the subject line "Privacy Request". We will respond within 30 days.

10. Children's Privacy

NewsScope is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us immediately.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the platform after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
